Limerick is situated on the midwest coast of Ireland at the mouth of the Shannon river. With a population approaching 80,000 Limerick is Ireland's fourth largest city after Dublin, Belfast and Cork. Buses and trains from all over Ireland arrive at Limerick's main bus and train stations which are situated beside each other in the centre of Limerick. Bus Éireann, which means "Irish Bus" in English, is Ireland's national bus service and Iarnrod Eireann, which means "Irish Rail" in English, is Ireland's national rail service (iarnrod is literally traslated as "iron road"). The University of Limerick (UL), which will host GD 2005, is located 5 km from the city centre and can be reached by either bus or taxi. Buses depart for the university every 20 minutes from the bus stop in William st., which is a 10 minute walk from the main bus/train station, with tickets costing €1.25 each. The same journey by taxi can cost €8-10.

There are four major international airports in Ireland: Belfast, Cork, Dublin and Shannon.  Shannon at a distance of 24km is the closest airport to Limerick, while Belfast at a distance of 325 km is the furthest airport from Limerick.

Arrival at Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport is about 24 km from Limerick. Once you arrive at the airport you can reach Limerick either by bus or taxi. Buses depart from outside the terminal and run approximately every thirty minutes in the morning, hourly in the afternoon and irregularly after 6pm. Watch out for the Bus Éireann buses. The ticket to Limerick costs approximately €5 for a single and €7.90 for a return. You can check the current timetables online here.

You may also take a taxi to Limerick which will cost about €30. There is a desk in the terminal where you can book a taxi. Alternatively, you can rent a car which is a good option if you are planning to travel around Ireland. Limerick is a convenient starting point for exploring the West coast.

Arrival at Dublin Airport

Dublin Airport is about 200 km from Limerick. If you arrive in Dublin then you can travel to Limerick either by bus or train. Alternatively, you can rent a car or take a flight from Dublin to Shannon Airport which is next to Limerick.

Travelling from by train is more expensive than by bus but faster. The train journey from Dublin to Limerick costs approximately €40 for a single ticket and €46.50 for a return ticket while the same journey by bus costs approximately €14 for a single ticket and €22.50 for a return ticket. The trip from Dublin to Limerick takes approximately 4 hours by bus and 2:30 hours by train. Some trains require change at Limerick Junction (note that Limerick Junction is not Limerick Train Station; rather it is the station on the Dublin-Cork line at which you change for Limerick). The bus timetables are available online here and the train timetables here. The bus to Limerick departs from the Central Bus Station, Busaras, located in the city centre of Dublin. The train to Limerick departs from Heuston train station. Airport buses 747 and 748 bring you from Dublin Airport to both Heuston train station and the Central Bus Station, Busaras.

Arrival at Cork Airport

Cork Airport is about 105 km from Limerick. If you arrive in Cork then you can travel to Limerick either by bus or train. Alternatively, you can rent a car.

Travelling from Cork by train is more expensive than by bus and it is not necessarily faster because of the less direct route take. The trip from Cork to Limerick is approximately 2 hours by either bus or train. Some trains require change at Limerick Junction (note that Limerick Junction is not Limerick Train Station; rather it is the station on the Dublin-Cork line at which you change for Limerick).
